The climate of Quito and the highlands: four seasons in a day

Quito, at around 2,850 m, has a spring-like climate all year, but one that changes within hours: strong sun, clouds, rain and cold can alternate in a single day.

Why it changes so much

The altitude and the equatorial location mean mornings are often sunny and afternoons cloudy, with frequent rain. The temperature varies a lot between sun and shade, and between day and night.

What to bring

In the highlands it pays to dress in layers and always carry something warm and waterproof, even if the day starts clear. And do not forget sun protection: the high-altitude sun is very strong.
