Extreme UV index in Ecuador

Ecuador lies right on the equator, and cities like Quito are also at high altitude. That combination makes the UV index one of the highest on the planet, all year round and often without it feeling hot.

What each level means

• 0–2 low · 3–5 moderate · 6–7 high
• 8–10 very high · 11+ extreme

In the highlands it is common to exceed level 11 around midday.

How to protect yourself

• Use SPF 50 sunscreen and reapply every two hours.
• Wear a hat and UV-filter sunglasses.
• Seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., even on cloudy days.
