Rainy and dry seasons in Ecuador

Sitting on the equator, Ecuador has no warm and cold seasons, but periods defined by rain that also differ by region.

On the coast

The coast has a rainy season ("invierno"), December to May, hot and humid, and a dry season ("verano"), cooler and cloudier, the rest of the year.

In the highlands

In the sierra (Quito, Cuenca) the rain splits into two seasons a year, with drier spells in between. The temperature stays fairly even; what changes is the rain.

So it is worth watching the day's chance of rain rather than the season.
