Swell and surf on the coast of El Salvador

El Salvador is famous for its surf coast ("Surf City"), with waves almost all year at La Libertad, El Tunco, El Zonte and Punta Roca.

The swell

Pacific swell can build with long-period sets arriving from distant storms, even in fine local weather. It is ideal for surfing, but dangerous for inexperienced swimmers, especially because of rip currents.

How to stay safe

  • Check the swell and wind forecast before heading to the beach.
  • Respect the flags and warnings; beware of rip currents.
  • The UV index on the coast is very high: use sun protection.
