Rainy season and the canícula in Mexico

Across most of Mexico the rainy season runs from May to October, with intense afternoon thunderstorms, especially in the centre and south.

The canícula

In the middle of summer, usually between July and August, the canícula arrives: a stretch of several weeks with less rain and more heat across much of the country. It is a hallmark of Mexico's climate.

Storms and flooding

Heavy rain causes waterlogging and flooding in cities such as Mexico City. Avoid low-lying areas and underpasses during downpours, and follow the radar to see where the storms are heading.
