Storms (borrascas) and temporales in Spain: wind, rain and snow

In winter, Atlantic borrascas (low-pressure storms) sweep across the Peninsula with spells of wind, rain and snow. Since 2017, the strongest are given names (such as Filomena).

What they bring

Rain and strong wind in the north and west, heavy seas on the coast, and snow inland and in the mountains. Filomena, in January 2021, left a historic snowfall in Madrid.

How to prepare

• Heed AEMET warnings for wind, snow or coastal events.
• Secure objects on balconies and watch for falling debris.
• If you head to the mountains, check road conditions and carry chains.
