Temporales and tropical depressions in Costa Rica

Temporales and tropical depressions in Costa Rica

Although Costa Rica is almost always outside the direct path of hurricanes, it does suffer temporales and the effects of tropical depressions, with intense rain over several days.

Flooding and landslides

Pacific temporales and systems like Nate (2017) and Otto (2016) caused flooding and landslides. The Caribbean side also gets heavy rain from "cold pushes" (empujes fríos).

How to prepare

  • Follow the alerts from IMN and the CNE (National Emergency Commission).
  • Avoid rivers, gullies and low-lying areas during heavy rain.
  • Follow the radar to see how long the rain may last.
