Hurricanes and heavy swells on the Colombian Caribbean
Although inland Colombia does not suffer hurricanes, the Caribbean coast — and above all San Andrés and Providencia — are exposed to tropical cyclones and their effects.
Hurricane season
It runs from 1 June to 30 November, peaking between August and October. In 2020, Hurricane Iota devastated Providencia — a reminder that the risk is real.
Heavy swells (mar de leva)
The mar de leva is strong swell reaching the coast (Cartagena, Santa Marta, Barranquilla) that can flood coastal areas even without a local storm. Heed the warnings before heading to the beach.
