El Niño and La Niña in Colombia: droughts and floods
The El Niño and La Niña phenomena strongly alter Colombia's climate from one year to the next.
El Niño: drought and heat
El Niño usually brings less rain, more heat and drought. Reservoirs drop, the fire risk rises, and there can be water and power rationing, as happened in Bogotá.
La Niña: more rain
La Niña does the opposite: more rain than normal, with a higher risk of floods, river rises and landslides across much of the country.
