Extreme UV index on the altiplano: how to protect yourself

On the Bolivian altiplano, the mix of high altitude, clear skies and tropical latitude pushes the UV index to very high and extreme levels almost all year. La Paz and El Alto record some of the highest radiation values on Earth.

What each level means

  • 0–2 low · 3–5 moderate · 6–7 high
  • 8–10 very high · 11+ extreme

At altitude it is common to exceed level 11, even in cold weather.

How to protect yourself

  • Use SPF 50 sunscreen and reapply every two hours.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and UV-filter sunglasses.
  • Cover your skin even when it is cold: the cold is deceptive, the radiation is not.

Check the day's UV index on your city page before heading out.
