The north wind and the sudestada in Paraguay
In Paraguay, the wind usually rules the day's weather. Two players set the pace: the north wind and the sudestada.
The north wind
It blows warm and humid from the north, raising the temperature and the muggy feel and loading the air. When it strengthens over several days, it often signals storms: as it shifts to the south, expect rain and a sharp drop in temperature.
The sudestada
This is a south-easterly wind, cool and persistent, with overcast skies and drizzle. It lowers the temperature by several degrees and can last for days. After a heat wave, the sudestada is the big relief.
How to use it to your advantage
Check the wind direction and speed (in km/h) in the forecast: a shift from north to south almost always means a change of weather within hours. That lets you anticipate both storms and the arrival of cooler air.
