Rainy season and thunderstorms in Paraguay

Paraguay gets rain all year round, but the strongest thunderstorms arrive in spring and summer (October to March), often in the late afternoon after a day of warm northerly wind.

Why they are so intense

Warm, humid air rising from the north collides with cold fronts pushing up from the south. That clash builds storms with lightning, wind gusts, hail and heavy rain in a short time, which can flood city streets.

What to do during a storm

• If you can hear thunder, you are already within range of lightning: get indoors.
• Stay away from trees, poles and metal structures.
• Unplug electrical equipment and avoid running water.
• Do not cross flooded streets or streams, on foot or by car.
