Extreme UV index in the Peruvian sierra

Extreme UV index in the Peruvian sierra

In the Peruvian sierra, the altitude and proximity to the equator push the UV index to very high and extreme levels almost all year, even in cold weather. Cusco, Puno and Arequipa record very high values.

What each level means

  • 0–2 low · 3–5 moderate · 6–7 high
  • 8–10 very high · 11+ extreme

At altitude it is common to exceed level 11 around midday.

How to protect yourself

  • Use SPF 50 sunscreen and reapply every two hours.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and UV-filter sunglasses.
  • Cover your skin even when it is cold: the radiation does not feel like heat.

Check the day's UV index on your city page before going out.
