Rainy season and the canícula in Guatemala
Being in the tropics, Guatemala has no warm and cold seasons, but two periods defined by rain.
"Invierno" and "verano"
The rainy season ("invierno") runs May to October, with afternoon downpours, especially on the Pacific slope and the highlands. The dry season ("verano"), November to April, is sunnier.
The canícula
Midway through the rainy season, usually in July and August, comes the canícula: a few drier, hotter weeks. In the eastern "dry corridor", droughts hit crops. More than the temperature, it is worth watching the day's chance of rain.
