UV index and heat in Guatemala: how to protect yourself
Because it lies in the tropics — and because of the altitude of the highlands — the UV index in Guatemala is high almost all year, even on cool or cloudy days.
How to protect yourself from the sun
- Use sunscreen, a hat and UV-filter sunglasses.
- Seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- In the highlands, do not be fooled: the cold is deceptive, but the radiation is strong.
Heat on the coast
On the Pacific coast and in the Petén, heat and humidity push up the feels-like temperature. Drink water, avoid exertion at midday, and check the temperature and the UV index before heading out.
