The Zonda wind in Cuyo: what it is and how it affects you
The Zonda is a warm, very dry wind that descends from the Andes towards the Cuyo provinces — Mendoza, San Juan, La Rioja. It is the Argentine equivalent of the föhn.
Why it is dangerous
The Zonda can raise the temperature by several degrees in minutes, collapse the humidity and whip up dust and branches with strong gusts. It increases the fire risk and causes discomfort, headaches and irritability in many people.
How to look after yourself
- Drink water and avoid prolonged exposure to the wind and dust.
- Secure loose objects and take care when driving in the gusts.
- After the Zonda, cold air from the south usually arrives: be ready for a sharp change.
Check the wind, the temperature and the day's alerts before going out.
