The Catatumbo lightning: the most lightning-struck place on Earth

At the mouth of the Catatumbo river, on Lake Maracaibo, one of the world's most astonishing phenomena occurs: the Catatumbo lightning (Relámpago del Catatumbo).

Why there is so much lightning

Warm, humid air from the lake collides with cold air descending from the Andes, generating thunderstorms almost every night. The area records the highest number of lightning strikes per square kilometre on Earth, mostly at night.

When it happens

It can be seen for much of the year, with peak activity in the rainy season. It is a natural spectacle, but also a reminder that thunderstorms are dangerous: if there is lightning, take shelter indoors.
