The climate of the coast and Punta del Este
Uruguay's Atlantic coast, with Punta del Este as its star destination, has a climate of its own: milder than the interior and strongly shaped by the sea and wind.
Beach season
Summer (December to March) is high season: long days, heat tempered by the sea breeze, and water that warms up towards February. This is when Punta del Este, La Paloma and Piriápolis fill up.
Sea and wind
The coast is windy nearly all year. The wind shapes the state of the sea, the surf and the feels-like temperature: a sunny day can feel cool when a southerly wind sets in.
Off season
In autumn and winter the coast is quiet, cool and hit by the occasional storm. If you go then, bring warm and waterproof layers. Check the wind and wave forecast before planning the beach or a walk along the rambla.
