Rainy season and the canícula in Nicaragua
Being in the tropics, Nicaragua has no warm and cold seasons, but two periods defined by rain.
"Invierno" and "verano"
The rainy season ("invierno") runs May to October, with afternoon downpours, especially on the Pacific side. The dry season ("verano"), November to April, is sunny and windy. The Caribbean coast gets rain for much of the year.
The canícula and the dry corridor
Midway through the rainy season, in July and August, comes the canícula: a few drier, hotter weeks. Nicaragua's Pacific lies in the "dry corridor", where droughts hit crops. More than the temperature, it is worth watching the day's chance of rain.
