Thunderstorms and summer rains in Cuba
In the rainy season (May to October), Cuba sees thunderstorms almost every day, mostly in the afternoon, when the day's heat and humidity set off the downpours.
Why they happen in the afternoon
The sun heats the island through the morning; by midday and afternoon, the humid air rises and forms storms with lightning, heavy downpours and sometimes wind gusts.
How to stay safe from lightning
- If you hear thunder, get indoors.
- Stay away from trees, poles and the beach during the storm.
- Follow the radar to see when the rain approaches and moves away.
